Sometimes people ask me why my party talks so much about free breakfast clubs. Well, I think it’s pretty simple. Having visited some of the fantastic breakfast clubs that are already up and running in the city, I’ve seen how beneficial they can be for pupils and parents alike.

Yes, breakfast helps children be ready to learn. But they offer so much more than just a breakfast; they also provide parents and carers with free childcare at the start of the day, making it easier for them to get to work and juggle the morning rush.

So it’s no surprise that I’m delighted that the government has confirmed this week that it will double the number of government-funded breakfast clubs in the city from September.

They are:

• St Mary’s Church of England Primary School and Nursery
• Woolston Infant School
• Valentine Primary School and Nursery
• Hope Community School Southampton
• Wordsworth Primary and Nursery School

I’m pleased to see the government making quick strides towards delivering its pledge to have a free breakfast club in every school, and am looking forward to visiting these new ones later this year
