The River Itchen has become an open sewer thanks to the previous Tory Government’s hands-off approach. People in Southampton Itchen should be able to enjoy our local river without having to worry about filthy sewage in the river.
Sewage was dumped into the River Itchen 237 times for 2,397 hours by Southern Water last year. This a serious public health hazard with extremely high levels of E-coli being found in the river Itchen this year.
This has happened whilst water bosses have awarded themselves over £25 million in bonuses and incentives in between 2019 and 2024 in Britain.
This Labour Government is putting failing water companies under tough special measures to force them to clean up their toxic mess and protect people’s health and I have voted for these plans. Read plans here
