Let’s get on with it.
That’s what I told the government yesterday evening about bringing water companies back into public ownership.
I have previously said I want to see Southern Water brought into public ownership. And last night, supported by the hundreds of you who have signed my petition in the last couple of weeks, I took that call to Westminster.
In last night’s Westminster Hall debate, I told MPs that there is almost unanimous agreement that the existing model has failed — not just Labour voters, but people across the political spectrum.
I said we need a plan of the kind this Government has already shown it can produce for rail.
There is no reason the same could not apply to water: a sequence for bringing companies into public ownership, one accountable body, a defined timescale, delivered transparently.
We’ve made progress with the tougher measures in the recent Water (Special Measures) Act. But as I said last night, reforming a broken model is not the same as ending it.
