As Keir has done so many times since becoming leader of the Labour Party and then Prime Minister, he has this morning shown his immense character and dedication to country and public service. In doing so, he has made the right decision.
Keir will leave office with dignity and with a significant and undeniable record of achievement that has been felt right here in Southampton: investment of tens of millions of pounds for our local communities through the Pride in Place programme; the expansion of free childcare; NHS waiting lists falling; half a million children being lifted out of poverty; wages up; greater protections for working people, and, most recently, protecting children from social media.
All these changes happened because of choices Keir Starmer made. I am grateful for what he has done for my party, my city and my country, and I wish him and his family all the best for what comes next.
Whatever happens in the coming days, my focus remains as ever on working for my constituents in Southampton Itchen.
