Congratulations to Southampton-based Griffon Marine who have been awarded a £42 million contract by the Ministry of Defence.
This is a fantastic boost for local jobs and skills. As I saw for myself when I visited Griffon Marine’s shipyard in Woolston last week, the contract has already created 30 new jobs and apprenticeship opportunities, with many more to come, which is fantastic news for young people and skilled workers across Southampton and the Solent.
I met with some of the Southampton apprentices and it was clear how proud they are of the skills they’re learning and the work they’re doing to build and support boats for our defence and armed forces.
The Government’s increased defence spending is not just about national security; it is also creating good jobs, apprenticeships and skills opportunities for local people.
This is exactly why our maritime and defence industries are so important to Southampton and the Solent. They provide skilled careers, apprenticeships and real opportunities for the next generation.
Really proud to see Southampton young people helping build Britain’s defence capability while building their own futures at the same time.
