Darren speaks to one of the hardworking posties at Bitterne Manor Delivery Office

Today I paid a visit to Royal Mail’s Bitterne Manor Delivery Office to thank postal workers for their hard work during the festive period.

I was shown around the delivery office where staff are busy sorting letters, cards, parcels, and other items of post from midnight to 8pm daily.

I also spoke to postal workers about some of the challenges they experience on their rounds and spoke to senior managers to understand how they successfully meet the daunting challenge of delivering between 10,000 to 12,000 items of post every day from Monday to Saturday.

Our hardworking postmen and postwomen are some of the unsung heroes of the Christmas period. I was hugely impressed by the complexity and scale of the operation I saw today and came away full of gratitude for the behind-the-scenes work happening through the day and night that ensures those deliveries get to our doors through rain, shine and snow at this busiest time of year. I also talked to postal workers about some of the challenging aspects of the job, such as crime and anti-social behaviour, and will be raising these challenges in my meetings with local police and other partners across the constituency.

Our posties are true Christmas superstars and I hope next time you see them on their rounds you’ll join me in thanking them for the hard and often tiring job that they do – not just at Christmas but all through the year.
