Darren Paffey MP in Parliament

Darren Paffey, MP for Southampton Itchen, was elected last night (Monday 14 October 2024) to serve on the Education Select Committee in Parliament. Membership of the influential cross-party Select Committee will give Darren a prominent platform from which to contribute to and influence education policy and deliver on his pledge to break down barriers to achievement and opportunities for young people.

Darren has extensive experience and knowledge of education, having previously served as Cabinet Member for Children and Learning at Southampton City Council for a number of years.

Darren Paffey MP said:

“I am passionate about improving educational attainment and opportunities for young people across our city. That’s why I’m really pleased to have been elected to serve on the Education Select Committee. Drawing on my own life and work experience, I’ll work cross-part to ensure children and young people get the best life chances from government policy, wherever they’re growing up.”

Select committees work in both Houses. They check and report on areas ranging from the work of government departments to economic affairs. Select committees run inquiries on specific topics. The outcomes of these inquiries are public and many require a response from the government. Select committees also carry out their work through correspondence, by engaging with the public through events and surveys, holding round-table discussions and undertaking visits.
